As a child of the 1990s, I was fond of the old-school farewell, “Peace Out.” This cultural expression was catchy, but it wasn’t used merely to say goodbye — it was a way to wish someone well and hope for their peace.

Sometimes, when I consider the world we live in today, I wonder if peace has somehow “checked out?”

Our world is increasingly tense and conflict-filled, from international issues to the challenges we face daily. In some way, many of us long for peace so deeply, we seek it through various vices. However, actual peace—the kind that lasts—comes only from God. The ancient Hebrew word for peace is shalom and today shalom functions as a greeting and a farewell. It is a prayer for wholeness and harmony.

As disciples of Jesus, we’re called to more than hope for peace. As bearers of peace, we have a wonderful opportunity to take His peace out into the world.

The Pathway for Peace

Peacemaking begins with making room— room for God, room for others, room for understanding. God made a pathway of peace for the world through Jesus who is the way, truth, and the life (John 14:6). So while sin separates us from God, because of His love for us, He sent Jesus into the world (and for the world) to die, be buried and conquer sin and death so we would have a right relationship with Him forever. When we place our faith in Jesus, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Check out what Jesus says to his disciples as he prepares for the cross:

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” John 14:27 NLT

Jesus knew there would be trouble in the world, so he gifts us with the Holy Spirit to lead us, help us and comfort us as we live a life of purpose. Though we face uncertainty and trouble, we can rest knowing that God is with us and we can experience peace that transcends understanding. Do you know anyone who could use such peace?

Pursuing Peace

As we go about each day, we never know how heavy the burdens are for those around us — at work, at home, or wherever. Burdens can have an effect on our actions and how we engage with others. We may not understand their struggles, but God does. People experience God’s love when we are kind and patient (and bow out peacefully) in conflict and disagreements.

That does not mean that we will always agree, but we can respectfully disagree and seek to understand each other.

Peace flourishes when we provide space for connection rather than exclusion or avoiding a situation.

The call to peace is clear in Scripture:

“Depart from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” – Psalms 34:14 (NIV)

“If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all.” – Romans 12:18 (NIV)

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” – Colossians 3:15 (NIV)

Peace does not happen; it is pursued. It’s intentional. In a world that is often divided and has too much hatred, let’s strive to be people who bring and prioritize peace.

So, as we part ways, I will leave you with this: Peace is not lost — it is within us and available to share.

Peace out! ✌🏾
