How Do We Serve Our Local Community?
At New Beginnings, we believe that the church plays a pivotal role in the social change already taking place in our community. We want to foster deep, intentional, systemic impact in our local community, right here in the Bay Area. We call this ministry, "Transforming Communities."
We believe that God has commissioned us to help restore the world to justice. We take our cue from the early church in Acts 2:42-47. This community of believers not only prayed and shared meals together, but they “sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need” (Acts 2:45).
After a year-long strategic planning process, we are focusing on K-8 Education, specifically around third grade literacy rates. A student’s ability to read by third grade is a significant predictor of his or her future success, correlated with statistics like high school dropout and incarceration rates.
We will be working long-term with 1-2 schools in the Bay Area, which we will call our Strategic Partner Schools.
WHAT IS A STRATEGIC PARTNER SCHOOL?
A Strategic Partner School is a 3-year partnership between high-need, high-potential schools and NBCC. We work with the principal and district leadership to create a 3-year Development Plan customized to the school. Each school’s plan will look different! For example, the church might invest in some of the following ways:
- After-School Tutoring Support
- Food & Nutrition
- Health Services
- Parent Education
- Professional Development for Teachers
- Spiritual Support
We believe in deep, focused impact. We understand that this will take time, and we are committed to measuring our work alongside the school leadership to maximize our partnership together.
WHAT COMES NEXT?
The Transforming Communities team has been utilizing specific selection criteria to determine which schools will be our first Strategic Partner Schools. We are beginning with school districts closest to the highest concentration of people in our congregation.
We will be launching our Strategic School Partnerships in the summer of 2017.
